4 Cromwell Place, brings together work by designers and social entrepreneurs who interrogate how things are made and consumed. On the ground floor, a cluster of social impact projects from Bosnia, New Foundland, Malawi and the Netherlands propose alternative ‘not just for profit’ economic models such as ‘humanomics’ (bringing a human focus to economics by reinvesting in local communities) and ‘economic nutrition‘ (a labelling system that promotes economic transparency). On the upper floors designers and practitioners bring new thinking to traditional materials and production techniques, and foreground the significance of narrative in enriching design.

The Brompton Design District theme for 2017, ‘Other Stories – alternative perspectives on design’, was set by curator Jane Withers to explore unusual narratives in design. The programme aims to present work that questions accepted models and stimulates the imagination beyond product. These stories unfold across three townhouses in Cromwell Place, nearby garages and temporary exhibition spaces on and around Brompton Road.
