A new exhibition showcasing contemporary Zimbabwean basketry, Building Baskets unveils the process and results of a two-year participatory design collaboration between Kingston University’s Business and Design Schools, the basket weaving enterprise Lupane Women’s Centre, and the National Gallery Zimbabwe.

Kingston designers Simon Maidment and Carl Clerkin, inspired by projects conceived by Kingston Product & Furniture students in response to a live design brief set by the Lupane Women’s Centre, worked with 26 highly skilled crafters to develop new opportunities based on creative thinking. This exhibition brings together three-dimensional objects, photographs and videos of the workshop process in Lupane.

Curated by Professor Catherine McDermott and Candice O’Brien, the project is part of the British Council’s International Architecture and Design Showcase 2012 (June 21 – September 23, 2012); a global gathering of cultural projects that investigate architecture and design from across the world, presented for the London 2012 Festival.
Exhibition design is by Simon Maidment and Carl Clerkin with the graphic collaboration of Pali Palavathanan and SIF Harare.

Funded by the British Council Harare the event offers the oppurtunity to meet makers from Zimbabwe and the project team from Kingston. There will be a Q&A and networking oppurtunity.
